BRILLIANT NAJIB, PAS IN TATTERS

I HAVE said it here before that not many things in politics surprise me and that hasn't changed. But despite that I deem the reaction by Pas spiritual adviser Nik Aziz Nik Mat to the statement by his party's No. 2 Nasharuddin Mat Isa a bit strong, especially given the old man's image and reputation.

And as put here recently but in different words, reconciliation gels with what Islam teaches its believers but in this case it appears that politics has come in the way, thus clouding the thoughts of the usually patient and non-combative Kelantan mentri besar.

What is clear from the reactions to the national unity government suggestion by Pas president Hadi Awang is this: Firstly there exist many camps in Pas and each has a leader who's not hesitant to say his mind. Secondly is the position of Pas vis-a-vis Pakatan Rakyat. There also is the position that any meeting with Umno/Barisan Nasional must involve all three parties that make up Pakatan and I think this is enough to put the brakes on the suggestion from going much further.

Nik Aziz even went a step further by suggesting that there must be a minister from each of the three parties if the unity government is to materialise. That makes sense but he appeared to have pre-empted even a first round of discussions by placing a condition! It is also his view that the suggestion itself has caused a rift within his party. I agree and in this respect the statement by Umno president/PM Najib Razak that he thought Pas sounded sincere in wanting to meet on the suggestion was a political master stroke which put Pas on the defensive and into crisis management mode.

A SPONTANEOUS NIZAR?
NASHARUDDIN was of the view that former Perak MB Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin's action on his first day in Parliament on Monday was spontaneous. I wish I could agree with him but how could it be spontaneous when Nizar and supporters came prepared with the headbands which they took out almost simultaneously out of their pockets to wrap around their songkok and elsewhere immediately after Nizar made his outburst?

I think it's obvious that many don't agree with what Nizar did but party loyalty refrained them from saying more about his un-Parliamentary behaviour.

WAS THERE EVIDENCE?
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has filed to ask that the sodomy charge against him be quashed. One point raised by his counsel in submitting the application caught my eyes and this was the part that said "there was substantial evidence from experts which reject the sodomy incident."

The allegation against Anwar was contained in a police report by his former staff Mohd. Saiful who claimed that the incident took place in an apartment in Bukit Damansara last year.

I don't remember reading anything anywhere since then about substantial evidence in favour of Anwar. Nor can any of my friends remember anything to this effect. The report I read today (17/06) following the application didn't specify it either. Have I missed anything you haven't?

Aziz, you are beginning to write like an NST writer under the leadership of Ahmad Talib. It's a pity Ahmad Talib has no place for you in the NEW NST. Ahmad Talib only has place for his acolytes. Sorry Aziz, try your luck elsewhere.

nstman, u think i'm interested in any job that can can only be yours with the endorsement of putrajaya? if i wanted something like that i would have licked ass years ago, kept my mouth shut, not write critical reviews of my own paper and company (for internal consumption after being assigned mind you)...... but i will stop here bcos anything more may be misconstrued as something coming from a frusco who wants to be allowed to have a chair at balai berita but is not allowed to. u think i'm comfortable being part of a team that is politically appointed?

i think i'm ok with what i do for a living. no, not blogging bcos there's no money in it but i do get paid to write for various sources and also make cakes & other kuih for an income. thank god i'm still on my own two feet and still able to have fun.....cheers mate.

Well spoken, Aziz. You have principles, unlike many who call themselves journalists. Many who railed at you can finally see the real Aziz. Cheers.
